FAQs
Find answers to all your questions about our e-bike hire services.
This depends on what power setting you are using on your E-bike, cyclists’ weight and how good you are at using the gears. Rest assured our E-bikes use the best batteries in the market made by Bosch, they will take you to the end of the rail trail and back again and you will still have plenty of charge left. We will explain all this pre-ride.
The Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek section of the rail trail is 24kms each way. We recommend allowing at least 2hrs each way, this allows for 30 min stop along the way. Add in 1 hr for lunch at one of the villages, and this add up to a 5 hr round trip. However to make the most of the ride allow for 5-8 hrs so you can enjoy visiting some of our top attractions on the trail such as the Tweed Art Gallery and Hosanna Farm Stay.
Yes, in fact we encourage you to support these businesses in the small towns on the rail trail. Most of the towns have a store and several have a pub and/or food offering. We will recommend our favourites, which are also on the map we provide. Many operators are in the process of setting up other options as well which we will keep you informed of.
The rail trail has been developed over the top of an old train track. It is smooth, drains well and the inclines are gentle except near the tunnel in the middle part of the track. However, remember with Better By Bike you are riding our amazing E-Bikes, so any hills or headwinds, just add to the fun!
Yes, we offer return shuttle transport between your accommodation in greater Murwillumbah – Byron Bay area. The price for this is $149 including your E-bike.
If you know in advance that you want to be picked up by our shuttle transport for the rail trail, simply book the ‘E-bike Hire – With Return Shuttle’ option as its more cost-effective. Alternatively, you can decide on the day, and our friendly staff will be happy to collect you from any point on the trail that is accessible by vehicle, and bring you back to our shop in Murwillumbah.
No sorry, due to damage that has been caused in the past, our E-bikes can only be transported by staff on our purpose-built bike trailers.
Absolutely not, the rail trail is 24 km’s long and is back country for most of its length. The trail connects Murwillumbah Railway Station to Crabbes Creek station and crosses a few roads at railway crossings on its journey, otherwise the trail dives under or over roads along the way.
We provide top quality E-bikes, and everything you need to enjoy your day. This includes helmets, maps, waterproof panniers, phone holders, lights for the tunnel, sunscreen, and should you need it, full ‘trail support’ for your ride.
We also take you through a full briefing on how to use your E-bike, rail trail etiquette and tailored advice on sites and attractions along the way. We want to make sure all you need to do is enjoy your day!
Should you want it, we also offer shuttle transport to and from your accommodation, or one way back from the rail trail to our Murwillumbah store if you decide not to make the return on your E-bike.
Our 24-hour cancellation policy allows for great flexibility when planning your trip. If you contact us at least 24 hours before your booking date, we can transfer your E-bike hire to a new date at no cost, or cancel your booking for a full refund.
In cases of inclement weather (very rare) we will make a call on the day whether it is acceptable riding conditions or not. If the ride cannot go ahead, we will try to reschedule or refund the trip.
E-bikes are no different than a standard bike, other than the motor assists you making it easier to get from A to B. Our E-bikes have 4 operating modes from Eco to Turbo, so you control how much effort you want to put into your ride.
It simple – “You’re on holiday, enjoy the ride and see more”
Our E-bikes are super comfortable with ‘peddle assist’ motors. This means that when you peddle, the motor kicks in and gives you that ‘extra boost’. How much depends on the setting you choose, with 4 settings from ‘Eco’ for a bit of exercise, up to ‘Turbo’ for pure enjoyment!
E-bikes mean no more struggling up hills or into a headwind, just enjoy the day! If you ever want to try an E-bike this rail trail is the perfect place to give it a go.
As our rides are not guided, we have included ‘trail support’ so if you happen to have any issues out on the trails, for example, a puncture, we are only a phone call away to get you going again. We have our staff and comfortable shuttle vans ready to collect you and your E-bike if needed.
Murwillumbah – There is ample safe and unlimited free car parking space at our Murwillumbah shop, located at the Railway Station, the official start of the Rail Trail. There is also overflow parking for busy days.
