Ride Through Pastoral Landscapes, Hill Country and visit charming towns
The Lismore to Casino section of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail is 29.7km and begins at the historic South Lismore Train Station.
Heading west it rises from the valley floor through the rolling hills of the Lismore Valley. The trail crossing over Kyogle Road and through stands of native trees and farmland. You'll enjoy sweeping views across the wide pastoral landscapes before reaching Bentley Road, where the Richmond Valley opens up ahead of you.
From here the trail winds through stunning hill country, the landscape transitioning into a beautiful mix of pine and native gum trees sheltering incredible xanthorrhoea plants beneath their canopy.
The curved Naughtons Gap rail tunnel is a highlight of this stretch, the tunnel is closed to riders to protect its unique habitat for Bent-winged microbats, so the trail takes you up and over the top, rewarding you with panoramic views across the rural grazing lands below.
Past the tunnel, the trail descends through the hill district, opening up to sweeping vistas of the Richmond Valley and its beautiful pastoral lands. The trail then crosses open farmland and cattle stations before joining the edge of Casino and arriving at the Old Casino Railway Station.
Casino is a well-serviced regional town sitting on the banks of the Richmond River, known for its fine collection of well-preserved buildings from the 1800s and an unusually high concentration of art deco architecture from the 1930s. A ride around town to take in these historic streetscapes makes a great addition to your trail experience.
There are currently no refreshment stops along the way so bring snacks and water. If you would like to ride this section of the trail we offer e-bike hire, and transport if needed, on the 3rd Saturday of each month, starting 18th April 2026. Book your spot today, limited spots available.
