Our Bikes & Equipment

How long does the battery last on my e-bike?

This depends on what power setting you are using on your E-bike, cyclists’ weight and how good you are at using the gears. Rest assured our E-bikes use the best batteries in the market made by Bosch, they will take you to the end of the rail trail and back again and you will still have plenty of charge left. We will explain all this pre-ride.

Is it hard to ride an E-Bike?

E-bikes are no different than a standard bike, other than the motor assists you making it easier to get from A to B. Our E-bikes have 4 operating modes from Eco to Turbo, so you control how much effort you want to put into your ride.

What’s the difference between an e-bike and a regular bike?

It simple – “You’re on holiday, enjoy the ride and see more”

Our E-bikes are super comfortable with ‘peddle assist’ motors. This means that when you peddle, the motor kicks in and gives you that ‘extra boost’. How much depends on the setting you choose, with 4 settings from ‘Eco’ for a bit of exercise, up to ‘Turbo’ for pure enjoyment!

E-bikes mean no more struggling up hills or into a headwind, just enjoy the day! If you ever want to try an E-bike this rail trail is the perfect place to give it a go.

What is included in the e-bike hire?

We provide top quality E-bikes, and everything you need to enjoy your day. This includes helmets, maps, waterproof panniers, phone holders, lights for the tunnel, sunscreen, and should you need it, full ‘trail support’ for your ride.

We also take you through a full briefing on how to use your E-bike, rail trail etiquette and tailored advice on sites and attractions along the way. We want to make sure all you need to do is enjoy your day!

Should you want it, we also offer shuttle transport to and from your accommodation, or one way back from the rail trail to our Murwillumbah store if you decide not to make the return on your E-bike.

Are your e-bikes legal / NSW compliant?

Yes. All our e-bikes comply with NSW regulations, meaning the motor is rated to legal power limits, assistance cuts out at 25km/h, and there’s no throttle that allows the bike to move without pedalling.

What happens if my bike has a mechanical problem on the trail?

We offer trailside assistance, simply call our support number and we will either fix the problem, provide a replacement bike or bring you back to the shop if needed.

Can I bring my pet for the ride?

Yes we have large and small chariots for pets so your fur baby can come along for the ride.

I can’t ride a bike, what are my options?

If pedalling isn’t an option, our e-trike is a great alternative. It’s NDIS approved, with an upright seat and wide handlebars for a relaxed, stable ride, and a throttle option for those who can’t pedal at all or need extra assistance.

Do I have to bring a helmet?

No, helmets are provided free with every hire. Helmets are compulsory under NSW law, so we make sure every rider is fitted with one before heading out.

The Trail & Trip Planning

How long does it take to ride between Murwillumbah and Crabbes Creek?

The Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek section of the rail trail is 24kms each way. We recommend allowing at least 2hrs each way, this allows for 30 min stop along the way. Add in 1 hr for lunch at one of the villages, and this add up to a 5 hr round trip. However to make the most of the ride allow for 5-8 hrs so you can enjoy visiting some of our top attractions on the trail such as the Tweed Art Gallery and Hosanna Farm Stay.

Can I get refreshments on the way?

Yes, in fact we encourage you to support these businesses in the small towns on the rail trail. Most of the towns have a store and several have a pub and/or food offering.  We will recommend our favourites, which are also on the map we provide. Many operators are in the process of setting up other options as well which we will keep you informed of.

How hard is the rail trail with e-bikes?

The rail trail has been developed over the top of an old train track. It is smooth, drains well and the inclines are gentle except near the tunnel in the middle part of the track. However, remember with Better By Bike you are riding our amazing E-Bikes, so any hills or headwinds, just add to the fun!

Will I be riding busy roads?

Absolutely not, the rail trail is 24 km’s long and is back country for most of its length. The trail connects Murwillumbah Railway Station to Crabbes Creek station and crosses a few roads at railway crossings on its journey, otherwise the trail dives under or over roads along the way.

What is “Trail Support”?

As our rides are not guided, we have included ‘trail support’ so if you happen to have any issues out on the trails, for example, a puncture, we are only a phone call away to get you going again. We have our staff and comfortable shuttle vans ready to collect you and your E-bike if needed.

Can the return shuttle pick me up/drop me at my accommodation?

Yes, we offer return shuttle transport between your accommodation in greater Murwillumbah – Byron Bay area. The price for this is $149 including your E-bike.

Do I have to book the return shuttle transport?

If you know in advance that you want to be picked up by our shuttle transport for the rail trail, simply book the ‘E-bike Hire – With Return Shuttle’ option as its more cost-effective. Alternatively, you can decide on the day, and our friendly staff will be happy to collect you from any point on the trail that is accessible by vehicle, and bring you back to our shop in Murwillumbah.

Can I take the e-bikes in my own car?

No sorry, due to damage that has been caused in the past, our E-bikes can only be transported by staff on our purpose-built bike trailers.

Where do I park if I don’t want an accommodation pickup?
  • Murwillumbah – There is ample safe and unlimited free car parking space at our Murwillumbah shop, located at the Railway Station, the official start of the Rail Trail. There is also overflow parking for busy days.
  • Mooball – Meet us opposite the Moo Moo Roadhouse, where there is plenty of free car parking, look out for our Better By Bike white van. For large groups, please contact us to discuss possible alternate options.
Is the trail suitable for beginners?

Yes. The Northern Rivers Rail Trail is flat, with a maximum grade of around 4.5% for the journey up to the tunnel. Its a mix of sealed and compacted gravel and designed for all ages and abilities, so it’s a great option even if you’re new to cycling, especially with the extra help of an e-bike.

How fit do I need to be?

Not very. Because the trail is mostly flat and our bikes are electric, you can ride at your own pace and let the motor do the work on any inclines. If you can comfortably sit on a bike for a few hours with breaks, you’ll be fine

Are there cars on the trail?

No, the rail trail is a dedicated shared path for walkers, and cyclists only, separate from the road. There are a few road crossings but these are well signposted.

Do you have a trail map?
What do I need to bring (packing list)?

Comfortable clothing, closed-toe shoes, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and a water bottle. Our e-bikes come with panniers, so you’ve got room to carry it all.

What happens if it rains?

Give us a call, weather forecasts aren’t always accurate, and it’s often sunny on the rail trail even when it’s raining on the coast. Some riders are happy to ride through a bit of rain, but if you’d rather reschedule, just let us know beforehand and we’ll move your booking free of charge. If you need to cancel, we offer a full refund with more than 24 hours’ notice, or a credit voucher within 24 hours of your booking. See our full cancellation policy for details.

Where do we pick up the e-bikes?

Right at the start of the trail, at Murwillumbah Railway Station. Or we can meet you at Mooball at 9.30am with your bikes.

What is a self-guided tour?

A self-guided tour means you set off on your own e-bike at your own pace, with no guide riding alongside you. You’ll get a map, trail tips, and everything you need before you head off, then the ride is yours to enjoy in your own time.
